Pierre Huyghe - Exomind

Pierre Huyghe’s, Exomind is a sculpture comprised of cast concrete and a living bee hive. This work is part of a larger garden environment created by Huyghe in 2017 at Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine on the Japanese Island of Fukuoka.

Hughye’s use of the non-human within parks and garden spaces has peaked my interest this past year. In particular I am intrigued by his incorporation of figurative and representational forms with the creative capacities of the non-human. This brings to the fore a tension between the agency of the non-human world and traditional conceptions of sculpture as mastery of material by the human.

An interesting side note the figure itself of a crouching woman is based on a small statue by the Japanese sculptor Tobari Kogan (1882–1927), whose work was influenced by European modernism.

Hughye’s work can be found here.
